How to Measure a Steel Door

Important points to consider when choosing a steel door and taking measurements
For a steel door to function properly and also look flawless after installation, it is essential that the measurements are taken correctly from the place where the door will be installed. In this article, we will explain what should be considered when taking steel door measurements.
Where and How to Measure a Steel Door
The most important issue is where and how you take the measurement. First, when measuring the place where the door will be installed, it should be specified whether there is already a door installed. If there is no existing door at the installation location, the method of measurement should be clearly explained. In general, measurements can be taken in two ways:
1. Steel Door Wall Measurements (Wall-to-Wall Steel Door Measurement)
The width and height of the wall opening where the door will be installed can be measured clearly from wall to wall. If the measurement is taken this way, it should also be stated whether there is any obstacle restricting the door frames from the inside or outside (such as columns, wall endings, pipes, furniture, etc.). If such obstacles exist and are not mentioned, problems may occur during installation.
Another important point when measuring from the wall opening is whether the installation clearance—meaning the space required for the door to fit comfortably into the wall—has been considered in the measurement. If the measurement is provided as a net measurement without any installation clearance, this detail should also be specified.
2. Steel Door Frame Measurements (Frame-to-Frame Steel Door Measurement)
Another measurement method is taking measurements from frame to frame. In this method, the door frames are also included in the measurement. In other words, the parts of the door that overlap the wall edges are included in the dimensions. In this measurement system, it should again be stated whether there are any obstacles that may interfere with the frames.
Another important detail here is the wall opening size. If the measurement is taken from frame to frame, providing the wall opening dimensions as an additional detail is recommended. Because if the wall opening is smaller than the standard size, installation problems may occur.
3. Pay Attention to Wall Thickness
Another important detail when taking measurements is the wall thickness. It is useful to measure the wall thickness from several different points. In some cases, the thickness of the wall may vary from bottom to top. Even though adjustable frames are generally used for door frames, differences in wall thickness can still cause installation errors.
